Fantasy Football Season

Fantasy football season approaches! Why would I let a little thing like a newborn infant get in the way of this?

I’ve played fantasy football off and on since about 2005 when I joined a league with some people I knew from the internet. I think I came in 2nd place that year. (I’ve come in 2nd place a lot.) I wouldn’t say I’m particularly good at it. I look at the rankings and figure out who I want. I have a working knowledge of which teams are good and which teams are terrible. My philosophy is that a lot of it is luck because you don’t know who’s going to get hurt, so why spend a lot of time and energy researching people. I always have a random favorite player based on, like, his name, and I ALWAYS try to get Steve Smith because he’s a hardass. (I may have to rethink this philosophy this year. Will need to check on Cam Newton’s prospects first. And also whether or not he’s actually still even playing.) This approach seems to work out fairly well for me.

I have a problem, which Ben shares, in that if someone asks one of us to join a team we have trouble saying no because someone asked us to join a team! We love joining! So last year I found myself in six fantasy football leagues. (For those of you who don’t partake, this is way too many.) I had no idea which player was on which team and I ended up doing really poorly in most of them. So this year I am culling my participation. I’ve signed up for two leagues so far. I may go up to three but that will be it.

None of my leagues are for money. One of the leagues that I’m not doing this year was for money, but only like $20/person, which isn’t very much. I don’t do the high money leagues. See: my philosophy on fantasy football success.

So these are my three leagues:
1. Guy I used to play kickball with who now lives in New Jersey. In this league I know the captain and one other person. I think I’m technically supposed to pay money to be in this league but I didn’t last year. I probably owe someone like $20.
2. Ladyhockey league, including primarily the people I ran the marathon relay with. I know everyone on this league because I’m organizing it and I’m only asking people who are going to participate. (This is a large problem for non-money leagues – people will kind of space on organizing their team from week to week and it’s kind of annoying.)

I am a little sad that the league that is run by the friend of a guy that my friend used to be engaged to but isn’t engaged to any more (did you follow that?) is not happening this year. I’ve been on this league since my friend was engaged to the guy in the league, and now they’re not engaged and also not speaking any more (like four years?), and somehow I’m still in this league. I don’t know ANY of these people. (Except for the guy my friend used to be engaged to.) They all live – I couldn’t even tell you where they all live. I think some of them are in Philadelphia, some of them might be in St. Louis, I have literally no idea. (The guy who runs the league is taking the year off. It’s not that they decided not to invite me.)

Hopefully I’ll have all the drafts finished before the baby comes?

Reunion

We had our 15 year college reunion at the beginning of June. I could not attend because of Logistics1. My college is awesome, and I definitely missed out on a good time2.

Fortunately, some of my college friends are getting together this coming weekend. These are people I’ve seen on a semi-regular basis but we haven’t been together in a while. In honor of our weekend I dug up this picture containing a few of the wonderful people I’ll be seeing.3

This picture was taken in the spring of my senior year by an actual camera using the “timer” functionality (which is why it is off center) and we were all dressed up to go see Big Bad Voodoo Daddy at the House of Blues in Chicago. That should give you a fairly accurate guess of what year I graduated from college without having to use “math” to figure out what year it was 15 years ago4.

Plans include

  • Listening to Rusted Root and Toad the Wet Sprocket5
  • Playing Euchre6
  • Drinking7
  • Wearing flannel, etc.
  • I’m looking forward to this weekend!

1 – If you care, the reunion was Friday-Sunday, I had to work late shift on Friday, and we left for vacation – an 10 hour drive – on Sunday; Wooster is about a 3 1/2 hour drive, which I would have had to do with Elena, both ways, on Saturday.

2 – Although with the caveat that I probably wouldn’t have had as good of a time with a 3 year old in tow, I couldn’t have actually had anything to drink, and I probably would have grown a blood clot from all the driving.

3 – I have not tagged anyone on Facebook or whatever because SOME PEOPLE are “internet security experts” and “it’s their job to know about how things stay on the internet forever” and “wait until Elena turns 15 and Googles what you said about her” and “I have a fake name so no one can find me.”

4 – Also, look at the glasses.

5 – And The Cars Greatest Hits, although apparently they are not a 90s band?

6 – Fairly confident someone will pull an Ellettsville boner

7 – But apparently we’re NOT drinking Jack Daniels coolers and Rossi jug wine, so I’m not sure how THAT is going to go

Hey, how’s that pregnancy coming along?

Strangers have been me when I am due and I’m sort of surprised that they know I’m pregnant. I guess I have one of those body types where sometimes you can’t really tell, so I don’t get these questions until relatively close to my due date. In any event, time for a Pregnancy FAQ Round Up Post.

What is your due date anyway? It’s September 21. But Elena was born three weeks early so I am mentally preparing for a Labor Day Weekend baby. On the other hand I’ve heard (horror) stories about how someone had their first baby X days early and their second baby X days late. I cannot be having an October baby. That is crazy talk. Why? Because I will go insane if I am pregnant through the entire month of September after mentally preparing for a Labor Day Weekend baby.

Are you having a boy or a girl? A girl. I thought it might be fun not to find out this time, but for logistical reasons we decided that we would find out. Specifically, I had a bunch of girl clothes that I wanted to either keep if it was a girl, or give to friends if it was a boy.

Any names picked out yet? No. We didn’t know what Elena’s name would be til after she was born. We have a few ideas but we don’t really even have a short list yet.

Does Elena get to pick the name? Absolutely not. We do not want a child named Stinky or Poopy. Yesterday she suggested that “Elena” would be a nice name. This is a no-go also, as we are not George Foreman.

How are you feeling? My standard line is that I can’t complain. I’m getting around fine, doing a weights video a couple times a week, parenting my child without slipping into a coma mid-afternoon (MOST days), my clothes and shoes still fit, I’m able to get enough sleep most nights… seriously. So many people have it so much worse.

How are you going to make it through August? I spend most of my day in air conditioning so I really can’t complain about this either. However it is getting to the point where I’m pretty uncomfortable if I have to be outside for a long period of time. There were a few humid days last week where I was an unhappy camper and contemplated Hoveround rental. Additionally we’ve joined a pool this summer, so we’ll just be going there a lot.

How are you going to manage your firmwide walking challenge? Aren’t you on Erin’s team? How’s that going to go? Yes, our firmwide walking challenge started today and I muscled my way on to the team captained by the most competitive walker in our department. Last year I was on a team with a bunch of runners and the pedometers didn’t really register our runs with as many steps as they should have had, so I might actually do better this year as long as I make a commitment to walk. I’m thinking of walking at lunch today, which I never NEVER would do otherwise. So it might go well! Also I’m afraid of Erin, which I figured would be good motivation to keep active! (Fortunately I’m already hashtag-winning because one of my other teammates forgot her pedometer today! Mwhahahaha.)

    Update on the bird

There are definitely baby birds in there, but we are too terrified of who we’ve identified as “daddy bird” to go out and try to get a better look.  He just sits on the porch railing with his chest all puffed out and STARES AT THE DOOR.  I’ve started going out the front door and around the house to get to the garden and composter.
